Conant Middle High School went into lockdown Thursday after a student was reported to be in possession of a knife.

According to a letter Superintendent Reuben Duncan sent to parents Thursday evening, the 14-year-old male student was escorted to the office immediately after school administration received a report that he had a knife.

"While in the office, he refused to cooperate with the administration and participate in a search of his belongings. He became aggressive, grabbed the knife and his backpack, and ran out of the office area and into the school,” Duncan stated. “The school was immediately placed in lockdown. Concerned that he might have left the building, the school district also placed Jaffrey Grade School in lockdown. Rindge Memorial School ensured learners remained supervised inside the school building but did not lock down.”

Police arrived  to begin their primary search within a couple minutes of the school entering lockdown, Duncan stated. More than 20 police responded, searched the facility and ensured all students and staff were safe.  Additional officers were stationed outside Jaffrey Grade School, and police were present at Rindge Memorial School at school dismissal, Duncan stated.

“After searching CMHS three times, including a room-by-room search, the police deemed there was no further threat on campus,” Duncan stated.

A prior statement indicated that the lockdown at CMHS and the secure campus status at JGS were lifted once police determined there were no further threats.

Duncan wrote that the school was notified that the 14-year-old turned himself in, accompanied by a parent, at the Jaffrey Police Department Thursday afternoon.

“The school has taken immediate action, and the learner will not be in school for the foreseeable future,” he stated. “We are working on securing certified therapy dogs for each building for tomorrow. The counseling team will be available for anyone who needs support."
