Margaret Nelson announced Thursday that she will be retiring as executive director of The River Center Family and Community Center in early 2025.
Nelson has led the Peterborough-based organization that offers parent education, family support and community connections in Peterborough, Sharon, Greenfield, Temple, Dublin, Jaffrey, Rindge, New Ipswich, Mason and Greenville for the past 15 years.
In a letter announcing her impending retirement, Nelson stated that she “has grown as both a leader and an individual,” and that she is grateful for the center’s staff.
“They are an incredible team that is talented, compassionate and committed to the mission of strengthening our region’s individuals and families,” she stated. “We have shared tears, joys, frustrations and victories together. They will continue to do this critical work.”
In a letter that accompanied Nelson’s announcement, River Center Board Chairman Douglas Sutherland wrote, “I knew this day would come, but I hoped it would be a few years from now.” He added that his first reaction was “not yet,” followed by excitement for Nelson and her family, but as board director, his response was to thank Nelson for all she has done.
“Margaret’s commitment to our mission and vision has put us in a position to chart our future,” he stated. “In the months ahead, I hope you’ll join The River Center board and me in thanking Margaret for her inspiring and sustaining leadership.”
Nelson wrote that the board’s leadership has been vital, and that she has met “so many extraordinary individuals” who have made donations so The River Center can continue its work.
“I prepare to leave with a heart full of joy and gratitude, thankful for the opportunity I’ve had to support The River Center in making a positive difference in the lives of so many families and our community,” she stated.
