When the Blitz began taking its toll on London, producer Alexander Korda headed for Hollywood. There, with his brothers Zoltan and Vincent, he filmed a version of Rudyard Kipling’s “Mowgli” stories.
Produced in 1942, “The Jungle Book” is set in India and stars the Indian-born Sabu. It was the first film for which original soundtrack recordings were issued, and their commercial success paved the way for more original-soundtrack albums. The Park Theatre at 19 Main St. in Jaffrey will show the film Friday, Aug. 30, a 6:30 p.m.
“The Jungle Book” is the story of Mowgli (Sabu), a boy who was raised by wolves. Mowgli appears in a village in India and is adopted by Messua (Rosemary de Camp). Mowgli learns human language and some human ways quickly, though keeping jungle ideas. Merchant Buldeo (Joseph Calleia) is bigoted against “beasts,” including Mowgli, but not so Buldeo’s daughter Mahala (Patricia O’Rourke), whom Mowgli takes on a jungle tour where they find a treasure, setting greed in motion.
On Saturday, Aug. 31, at 2 and 7 p.m., the theater will show “Citizen Kane,” Orson Welles’s tale of a publishing tycoon’s rise and fall.
When a reporter is assigned to decipher newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane’s (Welles) dying words, his investigation gradually reveals the portrait of a complex man who rose from obscurity to staggering heights. Though Kane’s friend and colleague Jedediah Leland (Joseph Cotten), and his mistress, Susan Alexander (Dorothy Comingore), shed fragments of light on Kane’s life, the reporter fears he may never penetrate the mystery of the elusive man’s final word, “Rosebud.”
Tickets for both shows are $10/$9. Purchase in advance by going to theparktheatre.org or by calling the box office 603-532-8888. People can also buy tickets at the door. On Aug. 30, doors open at 6 p.m. with music by The Grateful Dads in the Lounge bar.
