The Nov. 21, 1929 Peterborough Transcript recapped a talk given to the Progressive Club  by Mrs. Harry Smith of Durham, where members “learned much about the trend of current affairs.”

“To her mind, the outstanding event of September, and October was the visit of Prime Minister MacDonald to this country, the first time in history when a Prime Minister of England had visited this country.”

Later, the article notes that “Naturally, she talked at some length about the crash in the stock market, describing it as the ‘greatest smash in history.’”

The crash to which Smith referred to was Black Monday, Oct. 28, 1929 – the start of The Great Depression.
