Letter: Reconsider the $44 million ConVal project

The School Board must go back to the drawing board on the proposed $44 million expansion of the ConVal CTE wing and theater.
While I deeply value the benefits this program brings to our community, the single "all-in" price tag presented is excessive. We need a more realistic, scaled-back approach. Yes, state funding may cover part of the cost, but let’s not fool ourselves – this isn’t “free money.” It’s still our tax dollars, even if they don’t directly impact local property taxes. And where’s the plan for the operating budget? Increased enrollment, additional staff, and ongoing supplies will inevitably drive costs higher. Failing to consider this is simply irresponsible.
We must explore creative solutions. Could the hospital’s training lab be shared? Could local businesses sponsor parts of the project for naming rights? The Peterborough library and Park Theatre campaigns proved that community-driven fundraising can be extraordinary. Arts grants, like those from the National Endowment for the Arts, are just a search away. And if three districts will benefit, why aren’t they contributing?
The board offered four options: complete the entire project, phase it in, do just the CTE or do nothing. But where is the fifth option – a scaled-down $10 million plan? This could meet critical needs while respecting taxpayers. Let’s prioritize smart, sustainable decisions that serve our students and community without breaking the bank.
