WiltonBoxing series kick off

The Town Hall Theatre in Wilton will launch a summer mini-series of silent-era boxing films with live music, beginning Sunday, June 8, at 2 p.m. with a screening of “The Shakedown” (1929). The theater is located at 40 Main St., Wilton.

Directed by William Wyler, “The Shakedown” tells the story of a con man prizefighter who must choose between continuing to fix matches or breaking free from those who control him. The film stars James Murray, Barbara Kent and Jack Hanlon, and will be shown in its original silent version with live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis.

Later entries in the series include Alfred Hitchcock’s 1927 boxing melodrama “The Ring” on Sunday, July 27, and Buster Keaton’s 1926 comedy “Battling Butler” on Sunday, Aug. 24.

Boxing was a frequent subject in 1920s cinema, reflecting the sport’s popularity during the era. Wyler’s early work in “The Shakedown” shows his developing cinematic technique, including moments of action, drama and humor. He also appears briefly in the film as a comic character during a fight scene.
