Letter: Vote yes to protect lakes

Road salt is one of the most-significant factors contributing to the deteriorating health of our lakes. We ask that Rindge residents help protect the health of our lakes by voting yes on Warrant Article 27.

The article calls for Rindge to adopt and become certified in more-efficient road salt application methods, as specified by the state’s Green Snow Program.

Road salt entering our lakes has many negative impacts, such as promoting the growth of toxic cyanobacteria blooms, and reducing the levels of dissolved oxygen in the water, essential to fish life. Even if you’re not a fisherman, consider that a lake without fish is on its way to becoming a weed-filled swamp.

You might see the words “salt reduction” in this article and question how this will impact the safety of our roadways. But the methods called for aren’t about reducing salt just for the sake of reducing salt, without regard to public safety. Rather, the program involves adopting proven methods of calibrating machinery and applying road salt in more-efficient ways, to achieve the same or even better safety results with less salt.

Beyond the benefits to our lakes, this can ultimately save money by requiring less salt to achieve the same results.

Please vote yes on Article 27 to protect the health and beauty of our lakes for all to enjoy.
